Frankenstein

The original classic!  Bela Lugosi had originally been asked to play the monster in the film.  He turned it down and instead did Murders In The Rue Morgue.  An Englishman by the name of William Henry Pratt was selected because the director noticed him in the studio commissary and thought his head had an interesting shape.  The actor spent hours with special effects makeup man Jack Pierce to become the monster.  He later said that any extra could have grunted his way through the role and that the true credit belonged to Pierce.  While Pierce did have a lot to do with how the monster looked, anyone who has ever seen the classic knows that all the credit goes to Pratt for how well the monster was portrayed.  Pratt wasn’t even invited to the premier and the studio gave the credit to “?”; both were a publicity stunt.  By the way, if you haven’t figured it out yet, William Pratt is the birth name of Boris Karloff.

1 9 3 5

Bride Of Frankenstein

Karloff reprised his role as the monster with the gorgeous Elsa Lanchester as the bride.  By now Karloff was so well known he was billed simply as “Karloff”.

1 9 3 9

Son Of Frankenstein

The third movie in the series is notable for having Bela Lugosi play Ygor, the assistant to Dr. Frankenstein.  Of course Karloff was back to play the monster.

1 9 4 2

T he Ghost Of Frankenstein

This was the sequel to Son Of Frankenstein.  Lugosi was back as Ygor but this time the monster was played by Lon Chaney Jr.

1 9 4 3

This movie picks up where both The Ghost of Frankenstein and The Wolfman left off.  Chaney Reprised his role as the wolfman and Lugosi made his only appearance as the monster.

1 9 4 4

House Of Frankenstein

This was a combination Dracula/Frankenstein movie.  The first half deals with Dracula and the second half picks up where Meets The Wolf Man left off.  Both Karloff and Chaney are in the film, but neither plays the monster!  Glenn Strange plays the monster.  John Carradine played Dracula.

1 9 4 5

House Of Dracula

In this sequel to House of Frankenstein Chaney, Carradine and Strange all returned in their previous roles.

1 9 4 8

Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein

Also known as: Abbott And Costello Meet the Ghosts, The Brain Of Frankenstein and Meet The Ghosts.

The title is a little misleading on this one.  Chick (Abbott) and Wilbur (Costello) meet the wolfman and Dracula too!  Lugosi is Dracula, Chaney is the wolfman and Strange is the monster.

1 9 5 7

The Curse Of Frankenstein

This was the first in the Hammer Films series of Frankenstein movies.  Peter Cushing is Dr. Viktor Baron Von Frankenstein.  Christopher Lee plays the monster.

The Teenage Frankenstein

Donald Glut is the monster in this one.

The Teenage Frankenstein Meets The Teenage Werewolf

Around the same time Teenage Frankenstein came out was a companion movie called The Teenage Wolfman, with Paul Klug as the Werewolf.  Well, these kids just had to get together!  Klug and Glut reprised their roles.

Later, a feral boy with a certain physical deformity (a large head with a flat top) is captured by scientists who refer to the boy as Frankenstein. 1 9 6 7

 Frankenstein Created Woman

Also known as: Frankenstein Made Woman.

The Hammer series was always more about Frankenstein and less about the Frankenstein monster.  In the fourth Hammer film Cushing was back to play the Baron (who else could?).  Hottie Susan Denberg is the creation in this one.

 The Projected Man

A scientist experimenting with matter transmission from place to place by means of a laser beam suddenly decides to use himself as a test specimen. But the process goes awry, and one side of his body becomes hideously deformed and instantly lethal to anyone it touches.

Cushing is still the Baron in one of Hammer’s best films in the series.

 Flick

Also known as: Dr. Frankenstein On Campus.

Campus radicals frame Viktor (photographed holding a joint) in an attempt to discredit both Preston and the Dean and Viktor is once again expelled. Vik injects Tae Kwan Do expert Tony with his new brain control pellets and soon Tony becomes an instrument of revenge.

The Horror of Frankenstein

This was a Hammer re-work of their original Curse from 1957.  Without Cushing it was not as successful as previous movies in the series.  Ralph Bates took over Cushing’s role.

1 9 7 1

Daughter of Frankenstein

Also known as: Lady Frankenstein and Madame Frankenstein

When Dr. Frankenstein is killed by a monster he created, his daughter and his lab assistant Marshall continue his experiments. The two fall in love and attempt to transplant Marshall's brain in to the muscular body of a retarded servant Stephen, in order to prolong the aging Marshall's life. Meanwhile, the first monster seeks revenge on the grave robbers who sold the body parts used in its creation to Dr. Frankenstein. Soon it comes after Marshall and the doctor's daughter.

Dracula Vs. Frankenstein

Also known as: The Blood Seekers, Blood of Frankenstein, The Revenge of Dracula, Satan's Bloody Freaks, Teenage Dracula & They're Coming to Get You.

J. Carrol Naish was Dr. Frankenstein a.k.a. Dr. Durea.  Zandor Vorkov was Count Dracula.  John Bloom was Frankenstein's monster.  Shelly Weiss was the creature and Lon Chaney Jr played a character called Groton.

1 9 7 2

The Curse Of Frankenstein

Also known as: The Erotic Rites Of Frankenstein.

1 9 7 3

 Blackenstein

Also known as: Black Frankenstein & Return Of Blackenstein.

In this really bad B movie Joe deSue is Eddie Turner, a disfigured veteran of the war in Vietnam.

Frankenstein

This TV movie had Robert Foxworth as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, Bo Svenson as the monster and Rosella Olsen as the bride of the monster.

Frankenstein's Castle Of Freaks

Also known as: Frankenstein's Castle, Dr. Frankenstein's Castle Of Freaks, The House Of Freaks, The Monsters Of Dr. Frankenstein, Monsters Of Frankenstein, Terror and Terror Castle

Nineteenth century Italy is beset by attacks from Neanderthal men living in a cave. The villagers manage to overpower one of them. Count Frankenstein (Rossano Brazzi) uses its body for experiments creating a monster called Goliath.

Frankenstein: The True Story

Also known as: Dr. Frankenstein.

This made for TV movie digresses in many ways from the book. The monster begins his new life as a beautiful, sensitive creature only to physically and aesthetically deteriorate as time goes on.  An interesting twist is the subplot of Prima, the second creature, created by Dr. Polidori (Victor's nemesis) with the assistance of Victor.  Leonard Whiting was Dr. Victor Frankenstein, James Mason was Dr. Polidori, Michael Sarrazin was the monster and a hot Jane Seymour was Prima.

1 9 7 4

Allen And Rossi Meet Dracula And Frankenstein

Marty Allen and Steve Rossi.

Flesh for Frankenstein

Also known as: Andy Warhol's Frankenstein, Andy Warhol's Young Frankenstein, The Devil and Dr. Frankenstein, Frankenstein, The Frankenstein Experiment and Up Frankenstein.

Regardless of what you call it this movies proves how talentless Warhol was.  Udo Kier is the Baron Frankenstein, attempting to create a new race of humans out of body parts. He wants to mate his male creation to his female creation so he figures he needs the brain of a real lady's man. By mistake, he beheads a man about to enter a monastery to become a monk. The creature shows no interest in his female companion, but the Baron's sex starved wife shows interest in him. He ends up killing her squeezing her to death while they are performing sex. This film is filled with lots of soft-core porn, nudity, and splatter.  Arno Juerging was Otto, the Baron's assistant, Srdjan Zelenovic was the male monster and Dalila Di Lazzaro was the female monster.

Frankenstein 80

Also Known as: Mosaic.

In this film a Dr. Shwartz (Bob Fiz) produces his "Shwartz Serum", a drug that helps patients’ bodies accept organ transplants. Enter our hero, Karl Schein (John Richardson). Schein's sister was in a car wreck and needs an organ transplant. Without a suitable donor, Schein turns to Dr. Shwartz. Unfortunately, the evil Dr. Otto Frankenstein (Gordon Mitchell) steals the serum, and Shwartz cannot produce more! Schein, a reporter, begins to investigate this and a series of deaths that involve organ stealing. Frankenstein has created a monster, named Mosaic (Xiro Papas) after his being made of many different body parts. Frankenstein uses this serum to keep the organs in Mosaic from exploding! Eventually the whole "Shwartz Serum/Dr. Frankenstein" connection is figured out and Mosaic is a hunted man.

Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell

Last of the Hammer Frankenstein films, this one deals with the Baron hiding out in an insane asylum, so that he may continue his experiments with reanimating the dead, along with inmate Dr. Helder, who has been institutionalized for conducting such experiments.  Dave "Darth Vader" Prowse is the monster, Cushing returned to playing the role of the Doctor and Shane Briant was Dr. Helder.

Young Frankenstein

In this hilarious treatment of the story Mel Brooks directed an all-star cast including Gene Wilder as Dr. Froederich Frankenstein, Marty Feldman as Igor, Peter Boyle as the monster (who dons a tux and sings “Putting On The Ritz”), Madeline Kahn as Elizabeth, Teri Garr as Inga and Cloris Leachman as Frau Bluecher (neigh).  In addition to numerous jabs at the original frankenstein there are jabs at the sequels.  Madeline Kahn does her hair up like Elsa Lanchester and Gene Hackman plays the blind hermit in a scene to take jabs at the Bride of Frankenstein.  Also, Police inspector Kemp is a caricature of Inspector Krogh from Son Of Frankenstein.  The movie was not all parody -- it was also a tribute.  Notable is that the lab set from the 1931 classic was obtained and used.

1 9 7 5

 The Rocky Horror Picture Show

This was the movie version of the Stage Play of the same name.  This was technically not a Frankenstein movie (or at least not a traditional one).  It was part homage/part parody of the B science fiction flicks of the 50’s and 60’s.  Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry) is experimenting with building the perfect man.  He finally succeeds with Rocky (former Mr. Olympia Peter Hinwood).  Meatloaf is Eddie, a previous attempt.  Bedlam and hijinks ensue when Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and his new fiancée Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) show up at the castle during the celebration.  The cast also includes the creator of the play and movie Richard O’Brien, Patricia Quinn (later Dame Patricia Quinn) and Nell Campbell (who sang as little Nell in the 70’s).  An instant cult favorite, you can still see it at midnight at several theaters.  You can also catch it on VH1 once in a while, but seeing it at home is not the same as seeing it in a theater.  If you don’t know why, I’m not going to ruin it for you and tell you.

1 9 7 7

 Victor Frankenstein

Also known as: Terror Of Frankenstein.

Leon Vitali was Victor Frankenstein and Per Oscarsson was the monster.

1 9 8 1

 Frankenstein Island

Also known as: Frankenstein’s Island.

This was a really bad B movie.  This one has a cheeze wiz rating of 100 on a scale of 10!  Amazons & zombies on an uncharted island.  A Balloon force lands on the island.  I don’t even want to go there…John Carradine is the apparition of Dr. Frankenstein and Katherine Victor is Sheila Frankenstein Von Helsig.

The Munsters' Revenge

Fred Gwynne, Al Lewis, Sid Caesar, and Yvonne De Carlo star in this funny TV movie. The late Fred Gwynne is Herman Munster who lives with Grandpa Munster (Al Lewis), wife Lily (Yvonne De Carlo), and his son and daughter. Sid Caesar is hilarious as the owner of a wax museum that has a whole section dedicated to the Munster family. When the wax figures of Herman and Grandpa begin to terrorize the town everyone blames the two. The two now have to clear their names before it's too late.

1 9 8 2

Blade Runner

Blade Runner has some remarkable parallels to Frankenstein. The film's artificial humans, the replicants, are thrown into a society which does not want them. Because people are afraid of the replicants' superior physical powers they have established a special police unit, the Blade Runners, whose sole aim is to eliminate - the film calls it "to retire" - replicants who return to earth. When Batty is not granted his wish for more life, similar to the Monster's wish for a bride in Frankenstein, he destroys "his Victor Frankenstein", Doctor Tyrell, the man who created him and whom he therefore addresses as "father".

1 9 8 4

 Frankenstein

The mostly Shakespearean cast is excellent of this BBCTV production Robert Powell as Dr. Frankenstein and David Warner as the monster who, in an interested change, is disfigured due to fire-burns rather than the normal stitches and decaying flesh. Carrie Fisher, who got top billing, appears in nothing short but a series of cameos.

Frankenstein's Great Aunt Tillie

Plot Outline: The descendants of Baron Frankenstein return to the family castle to search for the family fortune that is supposed to be hidden there.  Donald Pleasence is Victor Frankenstein & Yvonne Furneaux is Aunt Tillie.

Frankenweenie

Tim Burton directed this movie where young Victor Frankenstein's (Barret Oliver) pet dog Sparky (who stars in Victor's home-made monster movies) is hit by a car, Victor decides to bring him back to life the only way he knows how. But when the bolt-necked "monster" wreaks havoc and terror in the hearts of Victor's neighbors, he has to convince them (and his parents) that despite his appearance, Sparky's still the good loyal friend he's always been.

1 9 8 5

 The Bride

Sting stars as Frankenstein, the scientist, and Jennifer Beals is his new creation, Eva. She was intended as a bride for the monster ("Viktor" here) played by Clancy Brown, but when he sees her after she comes to life, he falls in love with her. Viktor, obviously upset, ends up going off on his own.  The rest of the movie deals with the development of both creations.  This is not your traditional gore fest and although it deviates from Shelly’s book it probably comes closest to examining the conflicts and feelings Shelly tried to project in her book.

Re-Animator

This splatter movie was based on a short story by H.P.Lovecraft. A medical student finds a serum to bring dead bodies back to life.

1 9 8 6

 Frankenstein '88

Also known as: The Vindicator.

This Canadian film went almost directly to video.  The Vindicator was a better title since it had absolutely nothing to do with the Frankenstein.

1 9 8 7

 The Monster Squad

The Monster Squad is a terrific re-telling of the House of Frankenstein, set in the late 80s. A group of young boys unearth an evil secret within the diary of vampire hunter, Dr. Abraham Van Helsing (Dutch, not German, but forgivable). Dracula (Duncan Regeher) has returned, and has re-animated Frankenstein's monster (Tom Noonan), and brought along an innocent, but tortured werewolf (Carl Thibault), the frightening Creature of the Black Lagoon-esque Gill-Man, and a 2000-year old Mummy (Michael Reid). This movie closely follows the myths and folklore of popular monsters (only wooden stakes and garlic are effective on vampires; even dynamite cannot stop the silver-prone werewolf; etc.)

1 9 8 8

 Frankenstein General Hospital

This film is a very poor man's Young Frankenstein set in a Los Angeles General Hospital with volume on the sexual puns turned way up. It deals with Mark Blankfield's Dr. Bob Frankenstein, with the help of his dwarf assistant Iggy (Leslie Jordan), creating a new Monster (Irwin Keyes) in his black and white laboratory in the basement of a Los Angeles General Hospital run by a bunch of money hungry, sex-starved nitwits.

Unfortunately, he was only able to save her head, so he goes to the red light district in the city and lures prostitutes into a hotel room so he can get parts for his girlfriend.

Frankenstein Unbound

Also known as Roger Corman’s Frankenstein Unbound.

The ultimate weapon, which was meant to be safe for the mankind, produces global side effects including time slides and disappearances. The scientist behind the project and his car are zapped from the year 2031 to 1817's Switzerland where he finds Dr Victor Frankenstein and his contemporaries.  John Hurt is the scientist Buchanan, Bridget Fonda is Mary, Raul Julia is Victor Frankenstein and Nick Brimble is the monster.

Frankenstein's Baby

In this TV movie Paul Hocking (Nigel Planer) quarrels with his girlfriend Jane Bligh (Kate Buffery) about when to start a family and Dr. Eva Frankenstein (Yvonne Bryceland) comes to his aid by helping him to become the world's first pregnant man!

Frankenstein 2000

No Telling

A scientist and his girlfriend escape the city life for the serenity of the country. In this peaceful setting, he carries out mysterious experiments in the barn while she befriends the locals, including Alex Vine, an ecologist trying to help farmers with the dangers of pesticides. Her and Vine strike up a friendly yet non-physical relationship. Meanwhile, the mad scientist boyfriend becomes impatient with his corporate sponsor's lack of providing live specimens for study, so he decides to capture his own.

1 9 9 3

 Frankenstein

This was a made-for-cable production. A lot more faithful to the novel than other incarnations but with the major change that the monster was no longer a resurrected assembly of corpses, but a being cloned from Dr. Frankenstein himself. Therefore, they can feel each other's pain and emotions. "Two parts of a single man," as the good doctor states. The twist is more like a "Jekyll and Hyde" idea, rather than the usual father and son relationship.  Patrick Bergin is Victor Frankenstein and Randy Quaid is the monster.

1 9 9 4

 Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

Also Known as: Frankenstein.

This movie was an effort to stay as close as possible to the original story.  Kenneth Branagh was Dr. Frankenstein and Robert DiNero was the creature.

1 9 9 5

Here Come The Munsters

Traditional Munsters type story but with new actors and actresses including Edward Herman replacing Fred Gwynne, Robert Morse replacing Al ‘grandpa’ Lewis and Veronica Hamel replacing Yvonne DeCarlo.

Monster Mash: The Movie

Also known as: Frankenstein Sings.

Two teens (Ian Bohen, Candace Cameron) are on the way to a Halloween party dressed as Romeo and Juliet when their car breaks down in front of a sinister mansion. Seeking help, they fall into a party of monsters led by Dr. Frankenstein (Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett who is famous for singing such songs as Monster Mash, Monster Rap and Monster Holiday).  Frankenstein immediately wants to transfer the boy's brain into his monster (Deron McBee). Dracula (Anthony Crivella) also wants the girl for obvious reasons.  Meanwhile Elvis (E. Aaron Price) has returned as a mummy and his new manager (Jimmie Walker) wants the boy's body for him. Lots of silliness results.  This movie also has Adam Shankman as the wolf man and John Kassir (voice of the Crypt Keeper) as Igor.

1 9 9 6

 Frankenstein And Me

A poignant trip down memory lane for those of us who grew up with cinematic monsters.  Pays homage to such films as Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Brides of Dracula and Night of the Living Dead.

 Frankenstein And The Werewolf Reborn

The 6th Day

A mad scientist creates new life.  Arnold Schwarzenegger has to face the bitter truth that he has been cloned.  Although this film was made strictly according to the "evil scientists is killed by his own creation" formula and features the usual bunch of Hollywood clichés, it is a quite interesting version of the Frankenstein story.

 The Memoirs of Elizabeth Frankenstein

The classic story of Frankenstein, as seen through the eyes of Victor's longtime lover, Elizabeth. Based upon Theodore Roszak's acclaimed novel.

There are several other movies which could be assumed to be inspired by Frankenstein.  The Island of Dr. Moreau (both versions) is a very good example.  Just about anything where an artificial life form is created that turns against its creator(s) could be deemed a Frankenstein movie.  By this criteria the Terminator series weighs in nicely.  However, to list all cyborg, android etc. movies would just be too extensive.

In scouring the Internet Movie Database as well as my own personal experience I have tried to be as thorough as possible.  If you know of an English speaking (or dubbed or subtitled) movie (full -length feature) that I have left out, send me an email.
